Natural English, an expression often used by schools and hopeful learners but what does it mean for the teacher? It means, put simply, be yourself, develop a style and manner that you’re happy with. Build in phrases that give frequent praise, correction, inquiry based skills and order in your teaching environment. Build in phrases and expressions that you would feel happy to receive if you were the student. You can play with accents and pronunciation, quote actors from movies, have a regular way to start/finish your lesson or simply encourage good manners and positive interactions through variation in the way you communicate with your students. Try not to be a ‘character, your teaching style will develop your ideal teaching character, which in turn comes from who you are. Relax and don’t take your day too seriously and your students will smile when you do, laugh when you do. Respect comes when your students realize that you respect them.
